"Send them away!"

Is that what you would say when new people come to your church? Would you say it about the current members?

Of course not! None of us would ever be that rude.

Or would we? It happens more than you think.

Once, after Jesus had spent all day preaching to a large crowd, the people were hungry and needed to eat. The disciples couldn’t see how they could possibly feed that many people. They told Jesus, “Send them away” (Matthew 14:15).

Not long afterward they met a woman who begged Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter. To the disciples this lady was a bother. They told Jesus, “Send her away” (Matthew 15:23). Thankfully Jesus did not take their advice. Instead, He rewarded the woman’s faith by healing her daughter.

Today many of our churches are losing members at an alarming rate. One reason is because of the way we deal with each other in church. Too often, whether we intend to or not, we send people away by the way we treat them. Our churches would be much fuller and much more productive if as church members and church leaders we learned how to deal with people better.
