The Bible uses lightning to describe Satan’s fall not in the sense of quickness but in the same sense that Jesus used lightning as an object lesson for His own return, that "every eye shall see it."
Basically, God didn't destroy Satan in one swift action as soon as his sin was discovered, but instead the Lord is currently destroying Satan methodically over time so that every sentient being in the universe will have an opportunity to understand the truth about the character of God and His enemy.
