From the seafaring town of New Bedford, Massachusetts, to the broad expanse of the world's great oceans went Joseph Bates. Joseph Bates learned of man's inhumanity to man firsthand in his life on the high seas. He was unwillingly impressed into the British Navy to serve several years, after which he was made their prisoner. But he gained freedom again and earned his sea captain's papers. During his life at sea he finally turned his attention to God, accepted Jesus as his Savior and left the sea to become a crusader for the Advent Movement of the 1830's. And this second part of his life is even more captivating than the first.
