Christian Divorces Up
For generations past, in many lives, the great day comes when two people, in deep love for one another, commit to their wedding vows, “For better or for worse... Till death do us part”. In many cases it wasn’t always a bed of roses and many marriages were endured rather than enjoyed, but to most, the vows stuck.
But the vow “Till death do us part,” doesn’t seem to have the same bond in today’s society. It can mean, till the sweetness runs out, or the couple can’t stand each other any more.
Anyone who claims to be a Christian with the Biblical understanding and principles to live by, has an advantage to prevent problems in their marriage. But latest figures don’t line up. A recent article leaves one wondering if so-called Christianity even works for the betterment of our families and community or not.
A study from Baylor University states that despite strong pro-family values, evangelical Christians have higher than average divorce rates, being more likely to go through a divorce than the average citizen who claims no religion. ~Baylor University Feb. 5, 2014
Is it a sign of the times? We are told in the last days, lust and immorality will be a problem – but with drastic results.
“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.” ~James 1:14-16
The Spirit of Prophecy tells us that, “the marriage vow would no longer stand as a sacred bulwark to protect the family. He who had the power, would, if he desired, take his neighbor's wife by violence. The fifth commandment would be set aside with the fourth. Children would not shrink from taking the life of their parents, if by so doing they could obtain the desire of their corrupt hearts. The civilized world would become a horde of robbers and assassins; and peace, rest, and happiness would be banished from the earth. ~Great Controversy, p 585
“We cannot fail to see that the end of the world is soon to come. Satan is working upon the minds of men and women, and many seem filled with a desire for amusement and excitement. As it was in the days of Noah, every kind of evil is on the increase. Divorce and marriage is the order of the time.” ~10MR, p 261
While these prophecies are coming to pass, the Bible still clearly teaches adultery is wrong and should not be a part of the Christian’s life and these temptations should be resisted. There are many verses of victory over the lustful temptations, but here is one well known set of verses to give us victory.
“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” ~2 Peter 1:2-4
For us who are married, may we revise in our hearts the wedding vows we each took and show the world that Christians can indeed keep the fifth commandment. It is possible, only through the merits of the life example of Christ being lived out in our own lives. Let us show all that the Word is true and sure.
